Google Plans Disruption in College Degrees

Google has recently made a colossal announcement that could disrupt the future of work and higher education.

Google said it’s planning on launching a selection of professional courses called Google Career Certificates, which will help teach a framework of skills that can help job-seekers find employment almost immediately. Instead of taking years to finish like a traditional university degree, these courses are designed to be completed in about six months.

“College degrees are out of reach for many Americans, and you shouldn’t need a college diploma to have economic security, we need new, accessible job-training solutions–from enhanced vocational programs to online education–to help America recover and rebuild.”

Kent Walker, Senior vice president of global affairs at Google.

In their statement, Google did not allude to the pricing of their new courses but if it aligns with similar programs that Google offers, namely Coursera, the price per month would be around $49. Coursera is a Google IT Support Professional Certificate program.

If Google’s new cost model is similar, a six-month course would be less than $300; compared to a University, that cost wouldn’t even cover what students currently pay for their textbooks in one semester. Google said it would fund 100,000 needs-based scholarships in support of the new offerings.

Launched in 2018, the Google IT Certificate program has become the single most popular certificate on Coursera, and thousands of people have found new jobs and have helped many Americans get back to work while breaking the high-cost barriers of continued education.

“In our own hiring, we will now treat these new career certificates as the equivalent of a four-year degree for related roles.”

Kent Walker, VP of Global Affairs for Google

The three new programs Google is offering per reports from Inc are as follows:

  • Project manager ($93,000)
  • Data analyst ($66,000)
  • UX designer ($75,000)
